Mackenzie Health is transforming care through the creation of an Innovation Unit, a first-in-Canada project which features a unique integration of advanced technology that transforms the delivery of care.
A first in Mackenzie Health’s Innovation Journey, the Innovation Unit is an acute care medical unit that has been transformed into a living and breathing laboratory for innovations to be developed, evaluated and adopted by other patient care units at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, as well as the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital and at the health system level.
The Innovation Unit includes 17 Smart Patient Rooms (34 beds) which feature “smart” beds, “smart” stations, “smart” badges, dome light indicators and hand hygiene support systems as part of a multi-phase implementation designed to enhance the quality of care.
By implementing technologies that are designed and integrated to improve the patient experience and clinical outcomes, doctors and nurses are better able to perform their roles and deliver safer, more efficient care to patients. Ultimately, it enables nurses and other inter-professional team members to spend more time at the bedside, providing hands-on care.
In February 2015, Mackenzie Health was awarded a grant from the Ontario Centre of Excellence to further explore communication alerting for clinicians using secure devices.
By combining Mackenzie Health’s clinical expertise in patient care and Patient Care Redesign® with ThoughtWire’s Ambiant™ platform and expertise in device integration and “smart” systems, Cisco Canada’s expertise in wired and wireless network infrastructure and secure unified communications, and BlackBerry’s expertise in mobile devices and secure mobile device management, we have assembled a “dream team” for the evidence-based design, implementation, evaluation, and spread of an Ontario-grown integrated, mobile, “smart”, and secure clinical messaging and alerting solution. By partnering with research scientists from University of Toronto, we will be able to demonstrate the value of our solution in terms of both process improvement, and health economics.
Phase 2 of this project will see the installation of the ThoughtWire Ambiant™ platform into the Mackenzie Health Innovation Unit, and integration with our Cisco medical grade wireless network, BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry mobile devices, as well as the smart beds, hand hygiene system, nurse call system, and real-time location system already present in the Mackenzie Health Innovation Unit. This project will demonstrate the value of mobile, “smart”, and secure clinical alerting and messaging in a healthcare environment.
